Our Story

A piece of Soweto's living history.

"We started with one table, one pot, and the simple belief that nobody should leave Soweto hungry — or unwelcome."

Wandies Place was born on Makhalemele Street in Dube, in the heart of Soweto, when South Africa was still finding its voice. What began as a small shebeen grew, plate by plate, into one of the most loved restaurants on the continent.

Through the decades, our doors have opened for neighbours, taxi drivers, presidents, footballers, musicians and travellers from every continent. Everyone eats from the same buffet. Everyone signs the same wall. That is the Wandies way.

Today, the third generation of family carries on the tradition — slow-cooked stews, smoky braai, mountains of pap, ice-cold drinks, and a welcome that feels like coming home.
